Scrimshaw Horn Description

This is a hand-carved scrimshaw horn, likely crafted from walrus or whale tooth. The horn features a detailed engraving of a large fish, with a smaller fish and what appears to be a boat or figures below. Above the fish is a striking depiction of an eagle’s head, showcasing the skill of the scrimshaw artist. The piece exhibits a classic folk art style, indicative of 19th-century maritime craftsmanship.

Scrimshaw Horn Condition

The scrimshaw horn shows signs of age and wear, consistent with its antique nature. There are some minor cracks and imperfections in the horn itself, and the engraving shows some fading and wear, particularly in the finer details. Despite these imperfections, the piece remains a captivating example of scrimshaw art, and would be of interest to collectors of nautical antiques, folk art, or historical artifacts.
