Four Hallmarked Silver Bottle Labels
This lot comprises a set of four hallmarked silver bottle labels, each engraved to identify the spirit or wine it accompanies: Whisky, Gin, Brandy and Sherry. Each label is suspended from a fine link chain and is intended to hang from the neck of a decanter or bottle. The set is offered with a combined weight of 44g.
Each label has a rectangular engraved plate framed by a raised, embossed border of scrolling foliage and shell motifs, with scalloped edges. The engraved lettering is set in a plain capitalised typeface, and the hallmarks are struck on the reverse of each plate. The chains are attached to the upper edge of each label and appear to be of a similar link pattern throughout the set.
Condition and Collectability
The labels show age-related wear consistent with their period, including light surface scratching and tarnishing to the plates, with some darkening in the recesses of the embossed borders. The engraved lettering remains legible on all four labels. There are minor marks and surface knocks to the raised decoration, and the chains show light wear. The labels are offered as found and have not been cleaned or restored.
Silver bottle labels of this type are sought after by collectors of antique silver, decanter accessories and period tableware. A matched set of four with clearly engraved spirit identifications and original hallmarks is a practical and decorative addition to a collection or a traditional drinks display.
