Smiths Empire Pocket Watch and Bone Pipe Tampers in Carved Wooden Box
This lot comprises a Smiths Empire pocket watch and two carved bone pipe tampers, presented together in a carved and inlaid wooden box. The watch has a chrome-coloured case and a white dial with Arabic numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial and the Empire name printed beneath the centre. The two tampers are turned and pierced, with one example carved with bands of decoration and the other with a slender, openwork form. One tamper is noted as incorporating a stanhope. The lid of the box is decorated with a carved floral panel framed by a geometric inlaid border.
Age-Related Wear and Collectable Appeal
The watch dial shows age-related marking and discolouration, and the case shows wear consistent with its years. The bone tampers display surface wear and colour changes typical of natural material of this age, and the wooden box shows general signs of use. Each piece retains its original character, and the combination of a Smiths Empire watch, carved bone tampers and a decorative box will appeal to collectors of pocket watches, smoking accessories and carved curios. The lot is offered as seen, with no guarantee as to the mechanical operation of the watch.
