Stanley Bailey No. 4 Smoothing Bench Plane
This lot is a Stanley Bailey No. 4 smoothing bench plane, a traditional hand plane of the type used for finishing timber surfaces. The body is finished in dark japanning and carries the Stanley name in an orange-red decal on the side. The plane has a turned wooden knob at the front and a shaped wooden tote at the rear, with a metal lever cap fitted over the iron. The Bailey pattern is the classic form associated with Stanley’s bench planes, and the No. 4 size is one of the most widely recognised sizes in the range.
Condition and Collectability
The wooden knob and tote show visible handling wear, with darkening and surface marks consistent with long use. The metalwork carries grime and staining, and the lever cap and iron are visible within the body. Original parts such as the wooden handles and the Stanley decal appear to be present, which adds to the plane’s originality. Vintage Stanley Bailey planes are sought after by woodworkers and collectors of antique tools, and a plane in this state may appeal to those restoring a working tool or adding to a collection of traditional woodworking equipment.

Items are sold on a “sold as seen” basis, electrical items etc are untested unless stated otherwise in the title of the items in question. We have a viewing day on Saturday 10am-3pm if you are unsure about an item from photos.
