Antique Whitby Jet Brooches

This lot comprises two antique brooches crafted from Whitby jet, dating back to approximately 1880. The larger brooch features a radiating, floral-inspired design, meticulously carved from a single piece of jet. The smaller brooch depicts a stylized butterfly, also carved from jet, showcasing the Victorian era’s fascination with natural forms and symbolism. These brooches exemplify the craftsmanship associated with Whitby jet jewellery, a material prized for its deep black colour and association with mourning jewellery.

Condition and Collectibility

Both brooches exhibit signs consistent with age and use, adding to their character and authenticity. The larger brooch is missing its pin, while the smaller brooch appears to be complete, though a detailed inspection is recommended. Despite these minor imperfections, these pieces remain highly desirable for collectors of Victorian jewellery, mourning jewellery, or Whitby jet. Their historical significance and unique craftsmanship make them a captivating addition to any collection.
