A Victorian Mahogany Spoon-Back Armchair
This Victorian mahogany spoon-back armchair is offered as a single lot. Its spoon-shaped back and carved frame reflect the form favoured for drawing room seating in the Victorian period.
The show frame is finished in mahogany and carved with a shell and foliate crest to the top rail. The back rises in a gentle spoon curve with a central panel of buttoned upholstery, and the scrolled arm fronts are also carved. The arms are upholstered with further buttoning and are supported on turned front legs. The seat is deep and the upholstery is finished with decorative braid trim along the front edges.
Condition, Originality and Collector Interest
The upholstery shows general wear, with areas of fading, marking and soiling to the green fabric, particularly across the seat and the arm panels. The decorative braid trim is loose or frayed in places, and there is some lifting to the edges of the covering. The carved mahogany frame appears structurally sound, and the carving remains crisp to the crest and arm scrolls. The frame retains its original form and the upholstery appears to be the original or an early covering, although this has not been confirmed. Buyers interested in Victorian seating may value the carved mahogany frame and the period spoon-back profile as a restoration project or as a piece to re-upholster to suit a traditional interior.
