A Large Slate and Marble Ansonia Mantel Clock
This substantial slate and marble mantel clock is attributed to the American maker Ansonia and is catalogued as circa 1850s. It is offered with a key, and its architectural form makes it a commanding centrepiece for a fireplace, sideboard or display shelf. Its strong Victorian character is typical of the period’s taste for heavy, statement timepieces.
The case is built in black slate with contrasting red and grey marble panels, which are set into the pedimented top, the front pillars and the plinth. Turned marble columns flank the dial, and the gilt scrolling ornament sits across the pediment, corners and base. The central brass dial has black Roman numerals, a decorative bezel and an ornate pierced bezel frame. The combination of slate, marble and gilt brass gives the piece a richly contrasting appearance.
Condition, Originality and Collector Interest
The clock shows the wear expected of an object of its age, including minor marks and softening to the gilt decoration on the dial surround and case. The slate and marble panels appear largely intact and original, and the dial retains its period character. The movement has not been tested, so prospective buyers should inspect the piece carefully and satisfy themselves as to its mechanism before bidding. Its size, original materials and Ansonia association make it appealing to collectors of Victorian horology and to those seeking a substantial antique mantel piece for a period interior.
