A Victorian Staffordshire Spaniel Dog
This lot is a Victorian Staffordshire pottery figure of a seated spaniel. The dog is modelled in an upright sitting pose, with its head turned slightly forward and its ears falling in full, sculpted folds. The glazed earthenware body is decorated in red-brown and white, with feathered brushwork across the chest, flanks and tail. A yellow collar with a pendant tag sits at the neck, and a black chain is painted in a looping line across the chest and shoulder. The eyes are outlined in black with yellow surrounds, and the nose and mouth are picked out in black and red. Figures of this type are associated with the Staffordshire potteries of the Victorian period.
Condition and Originality
The figure shows visible wear consistent with its age. There is paint loss and surface rubbing to the chest, shoulders and legs, and a chip is evident to the muzzle area. A small hole is present on the underside toward the rear, and there is dark staining to the feet. No repairs are apparent, and the decoration appears to be largely original, though the wear is clearly visible. The piece will be of interest to collectors of Victorian Staffordshire figures and to buyers looking for an antique dog ornament with period character, as its surface wear forms part of its history.
