Two Vintage Bank of England One Pound Notes
This lot comprises two Bank of England one pound notes, each presented in a clear protective sleeve. The first note, serial number R57L 465275, bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II within a green medallion and is signed by J.S. Fforde as Chief Cashier. The second note, serial number A06 980291, carries the Bank of England name, the denomination “One Pound” and a portrait of the monarch, with the Chief Cashier’s signature below. The reverse of the first note features a green “ONE POUND” panel and a seated figure, while the reverse of the second note shows a portrait of Isaac Newton alongside a planetary diagram and the name “Isaac Newton”.
Condition and Collector Appeal
The first note shows some discolouration and light marks across its surface, and the paper appears softened with an overall aged tone. The second note appears cleaner, with brighter colouring and fewer visible marks. Both notes appear to remain in the form in which they were issued, with no evident alterations. The pairing of two different design types, with differing signatures and portraits, may appeal to collectors of British paper money who wish to compare the designs of the one pound note across different periods.
