Nine Vintage Bassoon Reeds

This lot offers nine cane bassoon reeds, each with a tapered, fan-shaped blade and a shorter wrapped tube at the top. The tops are bound in thread and finished in red or orange lacquer, while fine brass wire ligatures secure the cane at the base of the wrap. The reeds are unmarked, so the maker is not identified, but their construction is typical of traditional hand-finished woodwind reeds. The set has been photographed alongside a wooden ruler, which shows the scale of each reed and helps buyers judge their size.

Condition and Collector Interest

The reeds show the expected signs of age, including some variation in the cane colour and minor wear to the lacquer and thread. No major splits or breaks are visible in the photographs, but the lot is offered as seen and has not been tested or played, so prospective buyers should inspect it closely before bidding. Their colourful wrappings and original wire bindings make them attractive to collectors of woodwind ephemera, teachers who display period instrument components, and anyone interested in the materials and methods of earlier reed making.
