A Vintage Church Bible Box
This vintage wooden box has the form and presence of a traditional church bible box, with a flat-topped lid and a deep rectangular body. The timber appears to be oak, with a pronounced figured grain and a warm, golden-brown finish that has deepened with age. The lid is hinged along the rear edge with brass fittings, and a small brass lock plate and latch sit at the side. The interior is fitted with pale plywood or pine panels and a brass-tone strip around the rim, giving a practical and understated finish. The maker and date are not marked on the piece.
Condition and Originality
The box shows the expected wear of an item that has been in use for many years. The veneer is lifting in places along the lid edges, there are scuffs and surface marks across the top and sides, and the base shows some handling marks. The gilt-style edging inside the rim has worn in patches, and the interior panels show light staining and small knots in the timber. The original brass hinges and lock hardware appear to be present, and the overall construction remains sound. The box has not been restored or over-polished, so it retains its original character. Collectors of church furnishings, ecclesiastical items and antique storage pieces may appreciate it as a genuine period piece, or it could be used as a display box or keepsake chest.
