Vintage Colette Butterfly Wing Hexagonal Compact
This vintage hexagonal compact by Colette, dating from circa 1950s, is offered as a decorative collectable from the mid-twentieth century. Its distinctive lid is set with a panel of natural butterfly wing, a material prized for its shimmering colour and sought after by collectors of vintage vanity items.
The hexagonal case is finished in a metal tone with fine vertical striations across the lid, and the Colette name is engraved within a diamond-shaped cartouche near the top edge. The butterfly wing panel displays iridescent blue tones with areas of warm brown, set within a metal bezel that follows the hexagonal outline. The interior opens to reveal a mirror set into the lid, with a compartment beneath. A small hinged clasp secures the case closed.
Condition and Collectability
The compact shows light surface wear consistent with its age, including minor marks to the metal case and some handling wear around the bezel edges. The butterfly wing panel retains its iridescent character, with some areas of browning that are typical of organic material of this period. The mirror and interior are displayed as seen, and no further assurances regarding function are given. Its combination of a recognisable maker’s name, a hexagonal form and a butterfly wing lid makes it of interest to collectors of vintage compacts, mid-century accessories and novelty vanity pieces.
