Two Vintage Facepots: Pickled Onions and Beetroot
This lot offers a pair of vintage novelty facepots, each a lidded ceramic storage jar moulded with a whimsical face. The first is a rich maroon beetroot pot, with a swirling relief face, curled ears on either side and a knobbed finial on the lid. The lid is lettered with the name of its contents, rendered in the photograph as “Beetcool”. The second is a cream and golden-orange pickled onion pot, its body glazed with brushed streaks to suggest the papery skin of an onion. It has a green stalk-shaped handle, a downcast mournful face and a lid inscribed “Pickled Onions” in script. Both pieces show the playful, character-led styling typical of mid-twentieth-century kitchen pottery.
Condition and Collector Appeal
Both pots appear to have their lids in place, and the glazes look largely bright in the photographs, with no obvious chips or cracks visible from the images supplied. Wear consistent with age and use is expected, and the buyer should view the lots in person or request further images, as hairline flaws and crazing can be difficult to see online. Novelty facepots of this kind are popular with collectors of retro kitchenalia and vintage ceramics, and a matched pair with contrasting colours and expressions makes an attractive display or a fun addition to a themed kitchen.
