Vintage Gilt Framed Embroidery of a Thatched Cottage and Church
This vintage needlepoint picture depicts a thatched cottage with timber-framed white walls and a brick chimney, set beside a flowering garden with a low gate and a path leading across a green lawn. A church tower with crenellated parapets rises behind the cottage, and a large tree fills the sky above the roofline. The scene is worked in tent stitch in a range of blues, greens, yellows, pinks and reds, and the design is sewn onto a fine open-weave canvas. It is presented in a gilt-coloured moulded frame with a decorative outer edge. The piece is unbranded and no maker is identified.
Condition and Collector Appeal
The embroidery shows its stitched surface with clear, well-defined colour across the cottage, garden and sky, and the frame’s gilt finish appears intact with no obvious chips or losses visible. The work shows no obvious signs of fading or fraying from what can be seen in the image. As an example of a period English country scene worked in needlepoint, it may appeal to collectors of vintage textile art and to buyers looking for traditional rural decor. Prospective buyers are welcome to contact the saleroom with any questions about the piece before the sale.
