Vintage Gommes Forge Fireplace Basket
This vintage fireplace basket bears cast lettering reading “Gommes Forge” on its back plate, which is the maker name this lot is offered under. It is a freestanding open grate with a dark metal frame, a solid back plate and a series of upright, pointed bars set between horizontal cross-rails. The front is finished with a row of rounded rivet heads at the cross-rail joints, and the sides have curved, scrolled supports that rise to pointed finials. Four splayed feet support the basket at the base.
Condition and Collector Interest
The basket shows clear signs of age and use. The dark finish is heavily worn, with patches of orange-brown rust and surface corrosion across the back plate, bars and cross-rails, and some flaking to the paintwork. Debris and residue are visible within the grate, and a few of the pointed tips and scrolled edges show chips and wear. Any further damage, missing elements or the condition of the feet and fixings cannot be fully judged from the photographs. Buyers interested in original vintage hearth furniture, or those looking for a decorative piece for restoration, may find this an appealing example of a named maker’s fireplace basket.
