Vintage Hand-Cranked Grape Press
This lot is a vintage hand-cranked grape press, offered from the Vigo vineyard supplies range. It combines a green-painted cast iron crank wheel with a stainless steel hopper mounted on a timber frame, and is intended for pressing grapes by hand.
The machine has a cast iron hand wheel with a turned wooden handle, which drives the mechanism mounted above the timber base. A tapering stainless steel hopper sits at the top, with riveted seams, and feeds into a set of galvanised roller elements fitted with raised pegs. The wooden frame is built from rough-hewn timber with log-style legs and a cross member, and a small metal plate is affixed to the frame. The overall construction is robust and typical of traditional small-scale winemaking equipment.
Condition and Originality
The press shows age-related wear consistent with its use. The green paint to the cast iron wheel has chipped in places, exposing bare metal, and there is surface rust to some of the metal components. The stainless steel hopper shows light scratching and marks to its surface, and the timber frame displays weathering and handling wear. A lot tag is attached to the hopper. The lot is offered as seen, and no assurance is given as to its operational state or completeness.
Original, unrestored examples of hand-operated grape presses are of interest to home winemakers, vineyard enthusiasts and collectors of traditional rural and horticultural equipment. Its combination of cast iron, stainless steel and timber construction makes it a characterful piece for display or practical use.
