Two Vintage Hudson Whistles
This lot comprises two vintage whistles bearing the Hudson name. The first is a brass example with impressed lettering reading Metropolitan Police, with the number 7427 stamped near the base, and the maker’s details J. Hudson & Co, Barr Street, Birmingham. It has a folded loop at the top for attachment and a cylindrical body with a slotted section, with a flared mouthpiece at the base. The second whistle is a darker, copper-toned example with the lettering G.P.O. to the body and the same J. Hudson & Co, Barr Street, Birmingham maker’s mark. It has a rounded cap at the top, a slotted section, and a flared mouthpiece at the base.
Condition and Originality
Both whistles show general age-related wear, including surface tarnish, patination and some darkening to the metal. The impressed lettering is visible on both pieces, though it is worn in places, particularly on the Metropolitan Police example. No replacement parts are apparent. Whistles of this kind, bearing the Hudson maker’s name and official markings, are of interest to collectors of police and postal memorabilia and to those who gather historic British whistles. The pairing of a Metropolitan Police example with a GPO example makes this lot of particular appeal to collectors of uniform and service-related items.
