A Vintage Norah Wellings Monkey Glove Puppet
This lot is a vintage glove puppet in the form of a monkey, bearing a woven label reading “Made in England by Norah Wellings”. The puppet has a soft, brown plush body and a tan fabric face, with its head, arms and hands forming a single hand-operated figure in the traditional style of English glove puppetry. Its outstretched arms and hands are finished in a contrasting tan fabric, and its rounded face is decorated with eyes, a painted red nose and a red-painted smiling mouth.
Condition and Collectable Interest
The puppet shows clear signs of age and handling, including wear to the plush fur and some loose threads visible at the hands. Its face and features remain intact, and the woven maker’s label is present and legible on the body. As an early example of an English toy maker’s work, it will appeal to collectors of vintage puppets, character toys and British childhood toys, and to anyone interested in the traditions of Norah Wellings.
