Four Vintage Smoothing Irons
This lot comprises four vintage smoothing irons, offered together as a mixed group of domestic laundry and trivet items. The pieces vary in material and form, and together they illustrate the range of household ironing equipment in use during earlier decades.
Among the group is a dark cast iron smoothing iron with a sculpted handle and a flat, pointed sole, its surface showing an embossed maker’s inscription that appears to read SIDDONS, partly obscured by wear. It sits on a green painted metal stand with three short feet. A second iron is cast in brass, with a turned wooden handle, scrolled brass detailing to the handle mount and a pierced body with slotted vents to the base. A third example is a small black cast iron iron with a light wooden handle and a simple, decorative top. The lot is completed by a brass trivet with a pierced fleur-style design and three turned feet, intended to hold a hot iron safely.
Condition and Collector Interest
The irons show the expected signs of age, including surface wear, darkening and some marks to the cast and brass surfaces. The wooden handles display general handling wear, and the green stand shows some chipping and marking to its paint. Please refer to the photographs and contact the saleroom for any further detail before bidding. Items of this kind appeal to collectors of domestic antiques, kitchen and laundry memorabilia and vintage metalwork, and the varied materials and designs make this a useful group for display or for those building a themed collection.
