Vintage Way Out Enamel Hanging Sign
This vintage red enamel sign reads “WAY OUT” in large white capitals and is offered as a double sided hanging sign. It is the kind of directional signage once used to guide people towards an exit, and it remains a recognisable and decorative piece for collectors of retro signage. The sign is shown hanging from two metal eye fixings at the top edge.
The sign has a rectangular form with rounded corners and a glossy red background. The white lettering is bold, sans-serif and evenly spaced over two lines, with “WAY” above “OUT”. Two metal rings are fixed along the top edge, allowing the sign to be suspended. The reverse is not shown in the photographs, so the second face cannot be assessed from the images.
Condition, Originality and Collector Appeal
The photographs show a sign with visible age-related wear. The edges show chipping in several places, with darker metal showing through at the corners and lower edge. There are small rust-coloured specks on some of the white lettering, most noticeably on the W, A and Y, and a small dark mark sits to the right of the T. The metal hanging rings show rust. A paper lot label is attached to the upper left corner. The surface remains glossy in the photographs, and the lettering is clearly legible. Any condition issues not shown in the photographs cannot be judged from the images.
Signs of this type appeal to collectors of industrial and transport memorabilia, as well as those decorating interiors with original signage. The bold red and white colour scheme and the honest signs of wear will suit buyers who value character and originality over a restored finish.
