Sword and Fly Whisk Set
This set comprises a sheathed sword and a fly whisk, likely originating from West Africa and dating to the mid-20th century. The sword features a single-edged blade, likely forged from iron or steel, and a wooden handle wrapped in what appears to be leather or a similar material. The sheath is constructed from leather and features decorative stitching. The fly whisk consists of a handle with a bundle of dark fibres, traditionally used for ceremonial purposes or to ward off insects.
Condition and Collectibility
The sword and fly whisk exhibit signs of age and use, consistent with their likely age and ethnographic origin. There is wear to the leather sheath and handle wrapping, and the blade may exhibit some patina or minor corrosion. Despite this, the set remains a fascinating example of West African craftsmanship and cultural heritage. This set would appeal to collectors of ethnographic weapons, African art, or those interested in the material culture of West Africa.
