WW1 Death Plaque – A Solemn Remembrance
This is a bronze memorial plaque, commonly known as a “Dead Man’s Penny”, issued by the British government to the next of kin of all military personnel who died of wounds or were killed in action during the First World War. The plaque depicts a figure of Victory with outstretched wings, standing on a globe, with the inscription “He died for Freedom and Honour”. The name “JAMES STAPLETON” is embossed on the plaque, signifying the individual commemorated. These plaques were cast in bronze and served as a personal, yet standardised, form of remembrance for those lost in the Great War.
Condition and Collectibility
This plaque exhibits signs of age and wear consistent with its historical nature. There are surface scratches and some patina development, which are typical for bronze items of this age and add to its authentic character. The embossed name remains clearly legible. This plaque is a poignant piece of First World War history, sought after by collectors of military memorabilia and those with a personal connection to the conflict. It represents a tangible link to a specific individual and the sacrifices made during a pivotal moment in history.
