Trench Art Shell Case
This is a fascinating example of First World War trench art, crafted from a spent artillery shell casing. The casing bears the inscription “Newton Pippin No22 Rifle Brigade”, indicating its association with that unit. The intricate detailing and craftsmanship suggest it was created by a soldier during lulls in combat, transforming a discarded item into a personal memento or a gift for loved ones. This particular example appears to be from a British grenade, dating back to 1915, and is a poignant reminder of the resourcefulness and creativity found amidst the horrors of war.
Condition and Collectibility
The shell casing exhibits significant wear and patina consistent with its age and battlefield origins. The inscription remains legible, though faded in places, adding to its authentic character. This relic is a desirable piece for collectors of military memorabilia, trench art, and First World War history. Its association with the Newton Pippin No22 Rifle Brigade adds to its historical significance and makes it a unique addition to any collection.
