Trench Art Shells
This pair of brass shell casings represent a poignant example of World War I trench art. Dated 1915 and 1917 respectively, these shells have been meticulously decorated with etched scenes depicting figures with what appears to be camels. The intricate detailing and the repurposing of wartime materials demonstrate the creativity and resourcefulness of soldiers during a difficult period. The fluted rims add a decorative touch to these unique pieces.
Condition and Collectibility
These shells exhibit signs of age and wear consistent with their history and creation. The brass has developed a lovely patina, and there are minor imperfections to the etching, which is typical of handmade trench art. These shells are highly sought after by collectors of military memorabilia and folk art, offering a tangible connection to the past and a testament to the human spirit amidst conflict.
