WWII Prisoner of War Chess Set
This remarkable chess set is believed to have been crafted by a prisoner of war during World War II. The set features hand-carved chess pieces, likely fashioned from bone or a similar material, and a playing board constructed from found materials. The pieces exhibit a naive, folk-art quality, reflecting the limited resources and challenging circumstances of their creation. This set is a poignant reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of those held captive during wartime.
Condition and Collectibility
The chess set shows significant signs of age and wear, consistent with its history and likely wartime origins. Some pieces exhibit chips, cracks, or other damage, and the board displays wear and discoloration. Despite its condition, this set is a highly desirable collectible, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of prisoners of war. It would appeal to collectors of militaria, folk art, or historical artifacts, and serves as a powerful conversation piece.
