World War I Shell Fuses
This lot comprises two World War I shell fuses, one German and one British, dating back to 1916. These fuses were recovered from the Somme battlefield, a site of intense fighting during the war. The brass construction suggests a degree of durability, and the differing designs reflect the technological approaches of each nation during this period. These fuses would have been crucial components in artillery shells, responsible for detonating the explosive charge upon impact.
Condition and Collectability
These fuses exhibit signs of age and use consistent with their battlefield recovery and age. The brass shows patina and wear, and there may be minor damage or corrosion. Despite this, they remain fascinating relics of a significant historical period. Collectors of military memorabilia, particularly those interested in World War I and the Somme, will find these fuses to be a compelling addition to their collections, offering a tangible connection to the past.
