WWII Eighth Air Force Target Map Book
This is a fascinating piece of WWII ephemera: a British edition of “Target Germany”, the U.S. Army Air Forces’ official story of the VIII Bomber Command’s first year over Europe. Published in 1944 by His Majesty’s Stationery Office, this book details the strategic bombing campaign undertaken by the Eighth Air Force between August 1942 and August 1943. It features detailed maps illustrating targets attacked, including shipyards, U-boat installations, airplane plants, and more, alongside a foreword signed by Air Marshall Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory. The book also includes a striking illustration of a B-17 Flying Fortress adorned with pin-up girl artwork and mission markings.
Condition and Collectibility
This copy shows signs of age and wear consistent with its wartime origins. The cover exhibits edge wear, scuffing, and some fading, while the pages are tanned and show evidence of handling. Despite this, the book remains structurally sound and retains its historical integrity. This is a desirable item for collectors of WWII memorabilia, aviation history enthusiasts, and those interested in the strategic bombing campaign. The combination of the official documentation, detailed maps, and unique artwork makes this a compelling and rare find.
