Katsukawa Shunsho Woodblock Prints

This pair of woodblock prints are attributed to Katsukawa Shunsho, a prominent artist of the Edo period (1726-1792). These prints depict Kabuki actors in dynamic poses, showcasing the artist’s skill in capturing movement and emotion. The prints exhibit the characteristic style of Ukiyo-e, with bold lines, vibrant colours (though faded with age), and detailed depictions of costumes and expressions. The prints likely formed part of a larger series portraying famous actors of the time.

Condition and Collectibility

These woodblock prints show signs of age and wear, including fading of colours, some creasing, and minor paper loss. Despite these imperfections, the prints remain a valuable example of Katsukawa Shunsho’s work and a fascinating glimpse into the world of Kabuki theatre during the Edo period. Collectors of Japanese art and Ukiyo-e prints will find these prints a desirable addition to their collections, offering both historical and artistic significance.
